Breaking through a plateau

Had a couple gigs last night. On my way to the Upper Deck Sports Bar and Grille, in beautiful Barre, Massachusettes, we stopped off at 3G's Sports Bar in Worcester, for Andy Paquette's open mic. Andy was gracious enough to give me a few minutes on stage, even after I interrupted his hosting with a cell phone call. Got a few laughs there, though it was hard to tell from the stage who was laughing and who wasn't. Left there and headed for my next gig, put on by the wonderfully bubbly Anne Diaz. It was upstairs in a bar at a snow park, which was a really nice venue. My friend Dave Kanell went on first, and had a great set, the best I have seen him have since we have been doing shows together, he's really progressing very well. I got up next and in my own estimation, as well as a few audience members who sought me out after the show, absolutely destroyed. Once again, no notes, I ad libbed, messed with the crowd a bit, even threw out a new joke I used for the first time earlier in the night at the 3G's open mic. Anne went up next and had a great set, no surprise there, followed soon after by Sparky. This guy, is a certifiable nut! He does a great mix of improv, stand up, and music, with a ton of crowd work, and he got a ton of laughs as well. Had a few drinks and talked with some people after the set and headed home. I feel like I'm breaking through a plateau lately with my comedy. Getting up once a month was doing nothing for me, and now that I am able to go up at least once a week, I am improving by leaps and bounds.

So, I did the Main Pub show last night. It was a good night overall, I think it was my best show yet. Did not need to use my notes, riffed off the top of my head, which is becoming increasingly easier as I do more sets. Worked in a few fairly new jokes, and had a good time. I feel like I have crossed a threshold in my act, and it can only go up from here. Got consistent laughs, and even an applause break. Hit the Victory Lane Sports Bar OpenMic night on wednesday, did a decent 5 mintue set. Not a huge crowd, but a developing scene nonetheless. Last night I drove up to Worcester Mass. for a set at my good friend Andy Paquette's open mic, at 3G's Sports Bar. A decent crowd there also, got to meet some cool comics, and Andy bought the beers, so you know I wasn't complaining. Next show is this upcoming thursday at The Main Pub in Manchester. What a long, strange trip...

So I'm back from NYC, and my Last Comic Standing audition. I Got up at 2:15 AM, got dressed, and hopped in the car. After a quick detour for gas, I headed to New Haven to meet Dave Kanell, and hop a train to the city. We got our tickets, and on the train with no incident. Got to the city, and walked the 1.16 miles to Caroline's Comedy Club. The line was the length of the front of the building, and wrapped about halfway around the side when we arrived about 6:30 AM. We quickly secured our spot in line, and thankfully, met some VERY cool people. Craig Loydgren, and Anne Diaz, as well as a man named Gary, whose last name I did not get, but I certainly will not forget him. For the next few hours, we kept each other company, hanging out, bullshitting, cracking on each other and random other people around. At one point, Rich Vos, one of my favorite comics, walked past with a camera crew, and his wife, Bonnie Macfarlane. He got closer to us, and I stopped him, and he talked to me for a few seconds on camera. We continued to BS after that for a while, braving the cold aided by Craig's timely and humanly purchase of Coffee for us (THANK GOD FOR YOU, CRAIG!). As we rounded the corner of the building about 10:45 or so, things started to get a little brighter for us as we eagerly awaited the chance to get in front of the panel. We met, along the way, a fantastic Latino man who's only name I got was Ron, and he joined our group. Anthony Clark, from TV's "Yes, Dear", and host of this yaers LCS, came around and was interviewing random people in line. He walked past our group, and I turned away. When Dave pointed me back towards his direction, I realized he wanted to talk to me. We shook hands, and he asked me a few crazy questions, to which I of course had a goofy answer. He then shook my hand and told me he hoped to see me inside. I thanked him, and was handed a sheet of paper by a production assistant, who told me "fill this out and get it back to me, and we'll put you on TV" HOLY SHIT, I'm gonna be on TV! That excitement kept me going despite the anxiety I had over auditions. About 1:25 or so, a NYPD officer informed the 20 people in front of us, and everyone else behind them, that the line was cut off, and no one behind that point would be seen, but that NBC would be posting where to send an audition tape in. While horribly disappointed from being up since 2:15 AM, I was happy that I gave it a shot, and at least I would be on TV, even if it isn't living in the house and tormenting 11 other comics. I'll be sending my tape in ASAP, as I am an attention whore, and even though I am disillusioned with the whole thing, I still need to take that chance... see my MYSPACE page for new shows added as a result of this LCS experience.

Webster Theatre Show 3/3

Show went over very well. I had some good riffs on the host comic, Claudia Stavola, a very funny and engaging woman. Jesse went up with me, and his set went over well also. We'll be going back up again in April. I tried out a new joke, to lukewarm response, but to be fair, it was a room full of comics. Though they did seem to enjoy most of my other material, so meh, whatever. Hopefully I'll have audio up in a week or so at latest, Jesse recorded the whole set.

It has been a while since my last update. I Co-Hosted the Main Pub 1 Yr anniversary show, Went pretty well, the video from my portion is up on www.myspace.com/davezamoider and www.amciccio.com . Some very good comics, and a terrific co-host, my good friend Jamie Reopell. My next show is this upcoming friday at the Webster Theatre Underground, on Webster St. in Hartford, starting at 10PM. I'll be heading up with another good friend, Jesse G., and meeting yet another great guy, Dave Kannell. Should be a fun night. Sunday night Jesse has graciously invited me to perform on his Adagio show in New London for the 3rd month in a row, so I guess I'm kissing all the correct asses. Then Monday late night, I may the LONG trek to NYC on the train, to get in front of Caroline's on Broadway to audition for Last Comic Stnading on NBC. It may be the only opportunity to do this, so I'm taking my shot. Even if I make it on the flubs part of the show, a la American Idol, I'll be taking a page from the Paris Hilton book of Attention Whoring, "no publicity is bad publicity".

So last nights shows were interesting. The first show at Pyzzz in Putnam went over very well. Saw my friend Dave Kanell, most of my paintball team showed up, so that was cool. Met Andy Paquette, a very funny guy, who's cousin, Dan The Librarian I have worked with many times. Also got to meet Scott Higgins, a very funny guy, who will be headlining my hosting gig at The Main Pub in 2 weeks. Then came the other half of the night, the open mic at The Oasis Pub. Jesse G, good friend and fellow comic went on first. This crowd was BRUTAL. He didn't get his first joke out before they started heckling him. He did real well handling it though, and passed the mic to me. They were a bit kinder to me, they actually shut up to hear some of my material. Had to deal with a couple hecklers, it was a lot of fun, just not at all what I expected. My first time having hecklers was a great learning experience. I think that I excel at thinking on the fly, so I got to showcase some of that with these folks. All were extremely nice after the show, telling me I was funny, and to come back, and I know I will, I need more practice dealing with hecklers anyway.

Bombs over Baghdad

So, last night, I bombed for the first time. I wouldn't call it a total bomb, but pretty close. The other comics at the show laughed, but the crowd just didn't seem to be into me. Oh well, I have 4 days to make this set work before the main pub show, I'll be on top of my game hopefully, if I can beat this cold.

Happy New Year, and many regards to all the people who check my site, I hope the both of you enjoyed your night. Went to see Nick Dipaolo last night at Mohegan Sun. The man KILLED, destroyed, ravaged the crowd. Amazing show. His opener was so bad, he gives me hope that if someone as unfunny as him can get paid to be a comedian, so can I.

Looks like my next show is January 26th at The Main Pub in Manchester CT, more news to follow If I get something before then!

OK, so my show at the Addagio went very well. We played to a packed house of about 30 people, in a small intimate club. A nice venue overall, I enjoyed the place. Hopefully it will be a new monthly home for us. Anyone who wants to see the video, go to www.amciccio.com it's posted there. I will next be appearing at The Main Pub in Manchester CT on Dec 29th. Stop in, have a few laughs, drink a lot (that's for Keith, the bar manager:)) and have a good time. Winter of my discontent......

Why is it so goddam warm outside? It's november for chrissakes, it should not be 55 degrees. Where's the fucking snow? WHERE I ASK, WHERE???

Main Pub Update

So, my first night of hosting didn't go near as well as I had wanted, but it was a positive experience all around. I wanted to tell more jokes in between sets, but I had not as much time to write and rehearse as I needed, and I kinda bombed, and had to pull out some of my older material. Did talk to a few other comics, and networked a bit. I'm hoping to put together a couple local area shows in the next month or so, as well as the Benefit show for Jaime. I need to get to NYC for some more mic time, maybe up to PACE in Mass. also. Ah well, you can't have a perfect show all the time, and I keep reminding myself I'm still real new, but I can't stand not getting a reaction out of a big crowd. Next time I will come better prepared. Big thanks to Greg Bonessi again for allowing me the opportunity to get up there and make a dirty reference to his wife.

OK so the rain has actually been gone a few days now, and I never thought I'd say this, but I wish it would come back. I have material to write in the next 10 days, and no motivation to do so. I want to lower the curtains and turn the lights off at home and pretend it's raining. Since I think I'm bipolar, I have to either be enraged or depressed to write decent shit, and right now I'm not either. It's like my brain switch is stuck on "complacent" and that's not where it needs to be. Oh well, I'll figure it out, I always do, and I'm sure, contrary to popular belief, it will NOT be from a corny joke one of my friends thinks will kill on stage...

Just a quick update. Working on material for my hosting gig, October 27th at The Main Pub in Manchester, CT. Making some connections to hopefully get in a NYC open mic or perhaps a show at PACE or Jitters to work on new and existing material. Big thanks to Greg Bonessi for allowing me to take his spot and host this next show, though I'm sure the bastard is only doing it so his selfish ass can do a whole set on stage. I hope to have more information regarding the benefit show I'm putting together very soon. I already have a great list of comics I have asked to join me on stage, and I will post all of the info as soon as I have more concrete details.
